- Saikhom Mira bai Chanu won a silver olympic medal in the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the women's 49 kg weighlifting category. She thanked her mother and her coach Vijay Sharma. She lifted 87 kg in Snatch and 115 kg in Clean and Jerk segment totalling a score of 202 kg. Karnam Malleswari won a bronze olympic medal in 2000 Sydney Olympics in 69 kg category. She was the first Indian woman to win an olympic medal and first Indian to win a medal for weightlifting. Here I tell the inspiring story of Mirabai Chanu from being a village girl of Manipur's Nongpok Kakching village to winning an olympic medal.

I am from Manipur and she recently said she used to travel on trucks that carry cement , to practice and the drivers would pick her every day from her house and she used the money for travelling for her diet. She also said she would donate money for the truck drivers. Its so emotional and inspiring

Incidentally, although Mary Kom lost her boxing bout to her Colombian opponent today, she also exhibited excellent sportsmanship and grace after the winner was announced. She not only congratulated her opponent the winner cheerfully and graciously, she left the ring smiling !! Personally I found her behaviour very inspiring.

Thank you Dhruv for making this video so much easy to understand about weightlifting sport. Please make more of such videos where we do not understand the basics of how difficult it is to win a medal in Olympics as we are not aware the basic understanding of that event. There are sports like Archery, Disc Throw, Javelin...etc where in most people (like me) are not aware of the rules on winning it and who is the best in that particular sport (from India and abroad).

In the beginning, Chanu started her training with a painful experience. To reach training centre at Imphal she used to take help from the sand filled trucks passing nearby her house. No bus or any other means was there in those days.
